Gentle Gazzetta Readers, April and May have been very eventful months for me marked by a wonderful trip to Barcelona and my first experience with “crowd-funding” – giving me a lot to ponder as I head into a summer filled with Room Series concerts. Ah, Catalonia! After two times in Spain – both for gigs in Madrid – third time was a charm and I finally got invited to Barcelona! I gave two solo performances in the Festival Internacional de Poesia de Barcelona – organized by the unstoppable Eduard Escoffet. It was me, Diamanda Galas, and a bunch of poets – and the festival published two of my works (Pop Titles ‘You’ and Flare Stains) in a commemorative book. Congratulate me; I’m now a published poet – translated into Catalan, no less! Barcelona was beautiful, and I had a great time with those tireless Spaniards – 3-course afternoon lunches, dining at 10pm, and hopping from place to place drinking half the night every night! It was truly too much fun. I got to share the opening evening at the Palau de la Musica with a lot of amazing and diverse poets, and my second concert at Fundació Joan Miró with the dynamic Arnaldo Altunes. The first concert was framed by music from Orquestra Mecànica de Cabo San Roque, an amazing MIDI-driven mechanical “orchestra” made from the antique servos and other mechanical materials scavenged from a defunct biscuit factory. Opening the evening with a rousing arrangement of Stravinsky’s Rite of Spring, it drew to mind Trimpin, or Ballet Mechanique, or the Italian Futurists. Every day in Barcelona was joy. I was very absorbed in meeting and interacting with the other artists at the festival events, but I also fit in visits to the Antoni Tàpies Museum and the MACBA, and some great walking through the beautiful city. Crowd-Funding Success! This morning, on KQED’s Forum, I heard Anna Deveare Smith say “We should be deeply honored when someone comes forward and supports us in the arts.” My sentiments, exactly! I feel tremendously honored by the outpouring of support (both financial and moral) from all my friends, colleagues, and fans of my work. I just successfully completed an online funding campaign through United States Artists for my web-based work Baggage Allowance. Thanks to many of you, I was able to raise the funds to finally complete the piece I’ve been working on for so long! The experience of using an online micro-philanthropy site (in the Kick-Starter model) has been an interesting one indeed. I have to be honest and say that it’s been both stressful and fun to do this campaign. It can be awkward reaching out to friends and colleagues for support, and there’s always the fear of crossing a line with people, so I hope everyone has taken my (too numerous) e-missives in the spirit in which they were meant. It can also be a thrilling ride navigating this sort of thing towards its conclusion and watching the support come in. And it’s heartwarming to see the long list of people who honor me with their support and/or wishes! I’m extremely thankful to the foundation United States Artists, for including me in their curated group of projects to raise funds on their site, and for their generous advice, encouragement, and infrastructural support. And, mostly, I’m tremendously grateful to the illustrious list of people who gladly supported me either with contributions or with words of support and/or made efforts to get the word out for me. There were 98 who made financial gifts, and also many who felt compelled to write or call with kind words even if they couldn’t donate. Thanks you! ALL of you! Baggage Allowance Launch Some of you have seen the performance work at Z Space (Theater Artaud) in San Francisco or at The Kitchen in New York. Some have seen the installation works at the Krannert Museum in Illinois or portions in the lobbies of the performance venues or at my Open Studios last year. Now, finally, the web-based version of the Baggage Allowance is coming to completion and is soon to be publicly launched. BAVC (my organizational partner on the project) will be hosting the San Francisco launch on July 28th. But everyone worldwide will also be invited at that time to experience the piece, when I’ll be revealing the now-secret URL! Meanwhile, documentation of some of the performance and installation portions of the work is available on my Vimeo channel, and my USArtists Project page. Room Series My little avant chamber series, Room, continues into the summer with concerts in June, July, and August. There will be a night of violas (coming up right away–this weekend on Sunday night!), a weekend of the Robin Cox ensemble in July – playing a repertoire that includes works by Amy X Neuburg and myself and, in August, the long awaited return of The Qube Chix! Read the events listings in this gazette for details! SoundWORK And, I’m bringing back my sound and performance workshop, this summer, for anyone who’s been wanting to take it. I’ll be teaching it through my own studio this time, in August, on a schedule soon to be determined.
